Fencing

Fencing is a sport of skill and strategy. It will challenge you physically and mentally, building character and athleticism. Join us and experience for yourself the excitement and deep tradition of this thrilling sport.

Fencing is a sport of swordplay that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

It is a thrilling sport that will challenge you both physically and mentally, while helping you to improve your speed, agility and coordination.

In the Keene Family YMCA’s fencing program you will not only learn technique, you’ll learn the history of the sport. Fencing has been around for hundreds of years, having originated in Europe as far back as the 14th or 15th century. It is one of five sports that have been a part of the Olympics since the first modern games were held in 1896.

Students in the Y’s fencing program have the option of attending either once or twice per week. Maintaining a safe and individual pace is emphasized.

Weekly lessons include history, terminology, form and footwork, and individual hand-to-hand lessons with the instructors. We’ll also include informal and structured bouts. This class is open to all fencers, regardless of experience. Equipment will be provided for use in class.
