4 Ways To Reclaim Your Health This Year

woman in a group class

Healthy living is about enriching spirit, mind, and body, at every age and stage of life. At the Y, we offer classes and programs that promote wellness, reduce risk for disease, and help you reclaim your health. Here we’ll explore four options for you to combat chronic disease and live your best life.

“Kickin’ Asthma”

This program by the American Lung Association is made for teens between the ages of 11 and 16 who have received a diagnosis of asthma.

Kickin’ Asthma is designed to empower youth through a fun and interactive approach to asthma self-management.

Taught by an American Lung Association Certified Facilitator, participants will learn to recognize their triggers and how to properly manage prescription medications. They’ll also learn how to detect the warning signs of asthma, avoid their triggers, and make decisions about their health.

When:

Tuesdays from 4-4:45pm – January 11, 18, 25, and February 1

Walking With Ease

This program by the Arthritis Foundation is for anyone age 18 and above who is looking to reduce the pain of arthritis and improve their overall health. It is ideal for those who need relief from joint pain and are looking to become more active.

Participants are taught how to safely make physical activity a part of their everyday life. Each class is an hour long and includes stretching, walking, and topic lectures. All participants receive a guidebook to help them succeed on their journey.

Classes run 3 days per week for 6 weeks. Days/times for this program are still to be determined. If you or someone you know is interested in joining this potentially life-changing program, please contact Stacy Wilbur at wi*****@ke********.org to be added to the inquiry list. We’ll reach when class is ready to start.

Diabetes Prevention Program

his program focuses on small, measurable, and reasonable goals to give participants confidence that they can make the necessary changes to reduce their risk for Type 2 Diabetes and live healthier lives.

In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will facilitate a small group of participants in learning about healthier eating, physical activity, and other behavior changes over 25 sessions. The year-long program consists of 16 weekly sessions and 3 sessions every other week during the first half of the year, followed by 6 monthly sessions during the second half of the year.

We’ll emphasize two primary goals:

  1. Reduce body weight by 7%
  2. Increase physical activity by 150 minutes per week

We will be offering both an in-person and a virtual class in January 2022. Please contact Stacy Wilbur at wi*****@ke********.org to be added to our inquiry list. We will reach out when class is ready to start.

Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance

This program for active older adults (age 50+) aims to improve balance, coordination and stability using gentle, low-impact movement based on the forms of Tai Chi.

This is a progressive, evidence-based, 24-week program that has been shown to increase confidence, reduce the risk of falling, and enhance overall fitness for participants. All levels are welcome.

This program can accommodate individuals who need some assistance walking, such as use of a cane. In addition to the program’s physical benefits, the safe, supportive group setting provides an opportunity for participants to enjoy learning with like-minded adults and find relief from the isolation that can sometimes come from living with limited mobility.
