Sending your child to summer camp is exciting – but it also comes with a lot of questions. Parents want to know what a typical day looks like, how safety is handled, and whether their child will feel comfortable and supported.
At the Keene Family YMCA, our goal is simple: create a safe, fun, and enriching summer where kids build confidence, friendships, and lifelong memories.
Here are answers to the most common questions families ask when considering a Keene Family YMCA summer camp.
What does a typical day at YMCA summer camp look like?
Every day at YMCA summer camp is designed to balance active play, creativity, learning, and friendship. While specific schedules vary by camp, most days include a mix of:
- Group games and outdoor activities
- Creative arts and hands-on projects
- Team-building challenges
- Free play and social time
- Water play or swimming
- Quiet reading time to support summer learning
Camp hours vary slightly depending on the program:

What are the different YMCA summer camp options?
The YMCA offers a variety of camps designed around different interests, age groups, and activity levels.
Camp Wakonda (Grades K–6)
Our classic YMCA day camp experience, where each week features a new theme filled with group games, STEM activities, creative arts, and team-building experiences. Campers spend the majority of their day outdoors, making the most of summer through active play and exploration. We move indoors only during severe weather, such as thunderstorms or extreme heat, so please plan for your child to be outside in light rain or typical warm summer conditions. It’s a great option for kids who want a little bit of everything.
Adventure Camp (Grades 4–8)
Perfect for kids who love the outdoors. Campers explore hiking trails, mountains, beaches, and local destinations with field trips and adventures almost every day.

Campers will experiment with materials such as resin, fluid painting, infusible ink, engraving, and more, while building creativity and confidence in a supportive environment.
Gymnastics Camp (Grades 1–6)
Campers build strength, coordination, and confidence while learning new gymnastics skills. The day also includes water play, arts & crafts, and outdoor activities.

Teens develop leadership and responsibility while earning First Aid, CPR, AED, and Teen Mental Health First Aid certifications, plus a recommendation letter for college or employment.

If your child is a little nervous, that’s normal. Our staff work hard to create a welcoming environment where kids feel safe, supported, and included.

Yes. The YMCA is committed to making camp accessible to all families through our Membership for All (MFA) financial assistance program.
For Camp Wakonda:
Families seeking financial assistance are required to apply for New Hampshire state assistance first. You can apply online at: https://nheasy.nh.gov/#/
- If you are approved for state assistance, those benefits will be applied to your camp costs.
- If you are denied state assistance, you may then apply for YMCA financial assistance through our Membership for All program.
For all other camps:
Families may apply directly for YMCA financial assistance through Membership for All without applying for state assistance first.
Applications for YMCA financial assistance are available at keeneymca.org/camp or at the Welcome Center. Our goal is to ensure every child has access to camp experiences regardless of financial situation.
When should I register for summer camp?
Camp registration is first-come, first-served, and many sessions fill quickly.
We recommend registering as early as possible to secure your preferred camp week.
If a camp is full, families can join the waitlist and will be contacted if a spot opens.
What skills will my child gain from summer camp?
Summer camp helps children grow in ways that last far beyond the season.
Campers often develop:
- Confidence and independence
- Teamwork and communication skills
- Problem-solving abilities
- Leadership skills
- New friendships and social connections
Most importantly, camp helps kids discover what they’re capable of.
What makes YMCA summer camps different?
YMCA camps are built around the Y’s core values of:
- Caring
- Honesty
- Respect
- Responsibility
Our programs focus on building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities. Campers don’t just participate in activities—they become part of a supportive community where they feel encouraged to grow.
Can children with special needs attend YMCA summer camp?
The YMCA is committed to providing a safe and positive experience for all campers.
If your child requires special accommodations or support, families are encouraged to contact the camp director before registering so we can work together to create the best possible experience.
What if my child wants to quit after the first day?
It’s normal for some children to feel unsure at first. New environments take time to adjust to.
We encourage families to give camp a fair try. Once kids make friends and settle into the routine, most quickly discover how much they enjoy camp.
Our counselors are trained to support campers through transitions and help every child feel welcome.
