What is Ninja Training? A Complete Guide to the Ninja Program at the Keene Family YMCA

A young boy navigates obstacles on the YMCA's ninja rig.

If your child loves climbing, jumping, racing, or turning your living room into an obstacle course, you may have wondered: Would Ninja be a good fit?

At the Keene Family YMCA, our Ninja Program gives kids (and even teens and adults) a safe, structured place to channel that energy into real skill development. Inspired by the obstacles you’ve seen on American Ninja Warrior, our program blends strength, agility, problem-solving, and confidence-building into one high-energy experience.

Below, you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions families ask about Ninja classes — from how to get started to competition opportunities and everything in between.

What Exactly Will My Child Do in Ninja Class?

In Ninja class, participants learn how to navigate obstacle courses designed to build:

  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Agility
  • Confidence
  • Problem-solving skills

Kids climb, swing, jump, hang, and race through age-appropriate obstacles such as:

  • Rings
  • Balance obstacles
  • Tumbling surfaces
  • Cargo nets
  • Traverse walls
  • Slacklines
  • Warped wall
  • Ropes
  • Ladders

Each class is structured and coach-led, but still fun and high-energy. Athletes are challenged at their individual level — no two Ninja journeys look exactly the same.

Is Ninja Appropriate for My Child’s Age and Ability?

Yes. Our Ninja program is designed for ages 6 and up (including teens and adults).

Classes are:

  • Highly interactive
  • Built around age-appropriate obstacles
  • Structured but flexible
  • Supportive and confidence-focused

Participants progress at their own pace. Our experienced coaches meet each child where they are and help them build from there.

If your child:

  • Climbs furniture
  • Loves hanging from monkey bars
  • Enjoys tumbling or racing
  • Thrives on physical challenges

… Ninja may be an excellent fit.

For beginners, Ninja 101 is the perfect place to start.

Do I Need to Sign Up for a Specific Class Level First?

Yes — and we’ve made it simple.

Step 1: Ninja 101 (4 Weeks)

Ninja 101 is our entry-level class and the foundation of the program. It’s welcoming, repeatable, and designed for:

  • Brand-new participants
  • Kids building basic coordination
  • Those who want fun, active training without competition pressure

Students can stay in Ninja 101 for multiple sessions as they continue developing skills and confidence.

Step 2: Ninja Training (8 Weeks)

After completing at least one Ninja 101 session, athletes may advance to Ninja Training.

This faster-paced program focuses on:

  • Advanced techniques
  • Strength and agility development
  • Obstacle mastery
  • Competition preparation

Ninja Training is the official pathway to our team.

Step 3: Ninja Team — The Mountain Ninjas

Our competitive team, the Mountain Ninjas, represents the Y at competitions throughout New England. Team membership is by invitation and open to YMCA members only.

Are There Opportunities for Competition?

Yes.

Our Ninja Team competes at events across New England during the competition season, which often includes events on many weekends.

For athletes who are serious about the sport and eager to test themselves, Ninja Training prepares them for this next level.

For others, Ninja can simply remain an incredibly fun and challenging fitness outlet. Competition is available — but not required.

What Is the Goal of Ninja Training — Skill Progression or Physical Play?

Both.

The balance depends on the class:

  • Ninja 101 emphasizes skill-building, confidence, and playful learning.
  • Ninja Training emphasizes measurable progression and technical mastery.
  • Ninja Team focuses on competitive performance.

Across all levels, the larger goals are consistent:

  • Build strength and agility
  • Develop resilience
  • Improve problem-solving
  • Grow confidence

How Does Ninja Differ from Gymnastics or Other Youth Sports?

Ninja is often compared to gymnastics, but they’re fundamentally different.

1. Obstacle-Based vs. Apparatus-Based

  • Ninja: Athletes move through changing obstacle courses (warped walls, salmon ladders, cliffhangers, rings, rope climbs).
  • Gymnastics: Athletes perform on fixed apparatus (vault, bars, beam, floor).

Ninja is about navigating dynamic environments. Gymnastics is about mastering specific events.

2. Flow & Problem-Solving vs. Choreography & Precision

  • Ninja: Athletes adapt, link movements, and strategize in real time.
  • Gymnastics: Routines are choreographed and judged on execution and artistry.

Ninja rewards efficiency and completion. Gymnastics rewards technical precision.

3. Strength Emphasis

  • Ninja heavily emphasizes grip strength and upper-body pulling.
  • Gymnastics emphasizes flexibility, body lines, and explosive power.

Neither sport is “better.” They simply attract different personalities and strengths.

How Does Open Ninja Differ from a Structured Class?

Open Ninja is:

  • A 45-minute time block
  • Supervised but not instructional
  • Free for members
  • $5 for non-members
  • Open to ages 5+

It’s a great way to:

  • Try the rig before committing
  • Mix up your workout
  • Have fun in an unstructured setting

Structured Ninja classes, on the other hand, are paid programs designed for progressive skill development and coaching.

What Safety Measures Are in Place?

Safety is our highest priority at the Keene Family YMCA.

Our program includes:

  • Age-appropriate obstacle design
  • Direct supervision by experienced coaches
  • Staff trained in child safety protocols
  • A clearly enforced Code of Conduct
  • A comprehensive Child Abuse Prevention Policy
  • First-aid equipment always within reach

Youth Development is a core mission of the Y, and everything in our Ninja program reflects that commitment.

Can Parents Watch During Class?

Yes — and we encourage it.

The Ninja room is fully visible through a safety-glass entry wall, and bench seating allows caregivers to observe class comfortably. Many families enjoy watching their child’s confidence and skills grow week after week.

How Should Kids Prepare for Class?

Preparation is simple:

  • Wear comfortable athletic clothing
  • Bring clean sneakers (required)
  • Bring a water bottle
  • Leave food outside the Ninja course

No prior training is required. Just show up ready to move.

Can Non-Members Participate? What Does It Cost?

Yes — non-members are welcome.

As an example:

  • Ninja 101 typically costs $45 for family members
  • $50 for members
  • $70 for non-members

Membership often pays for itself in program savings and also includes full facility access.
