Volunteer Spotlight: Elana Baron – A Champion in and Out of the Spotlight

Today our spotlight shines on Elana Baron, an attorney, animal lover, bodybuilding champion, and dedicated Keene Family YMCA volunteer. Born and raised in Montreal, Elana now calls southwestern New Hampshire home, where she lives with her husband and their beloved 136-pound English Mastiff, Odin. Odin, rescued as a puppy from Texas, has become a constant companion, even joining Elana at work every day. But there’s much more to Elana than her professional success and heart for animals.

A Journey into Bodybuilding

Elana’s athletic roots run deep. Her fitness journey began at age 10, lifting weights with her father. Although a busy career once took her away from regular workouts, a pivotal moment about 14 years ago reignited her passion for fitness. While she initially trained as if she’d compete, it wasn’t until two and a half years ago that she took the leap into bodybuilding competitions.

“In the aftermath of COVID, I had a moment of total insanity and clicked register!” she says, describing how she joined the Fitness Asylum, a women-focused program in Hudson, MA, founded by Bonnie LeFrack. With its structured and supportive approach, the program transformed her understanding of fitness, food, and body mechanics.

Since her first competition in October 2022, Elana has competed in multiple shows, excelling in both the Masters Figure and Bikini categories. Her recent victories at the Granite State Open and Monster Mash earned her two Pro Cards and further fueled her love for the sport. “What I’ve learned about food and how your body functions is incredible,” she shares. “Carbs are not the enemy!”

Preparation for competitions is intense. A 14-week regimen includes 45-60 minutes of lifting and up to 75 minutes of cardio six days a week, plus posing practice and a meticulously disciplined diet. Elana credits her husband for his unwavering support—even joining her on stage this year to earn his own Pro Card in Men’s Physique.

Commitment to Community

Elana’s commitment to the Keene Family YMCA goes beyond her personal fitness journey. As a YMCA board member, she passionately advocates for the Y’s role as a community cornerstone. “The Y is not just four walls,” she says. “It’s about outreach, diversity, equity, and inclusion. There’s a place for everyone, no matter where they come from.”

Her connection to the Y began after completing terms on the boards of other local organizations, including the Monadnock Center for Violence Prevention and the Monadnock Humane Society. Guided by her admiration for leaders like Steve Bragdon and Cheryl Belair, Elana found the YMCA’s mission aligned with her own values of community service and inclusivity.

Reflections

When asked what makes her community special, Elana says, “Keene is rare. It’s why I moved here and built my practice here. My law partners and I are deeply committed to supporting this community, and the YMCA plays a huge role in that.”

Elana’s journey from Montreal to Keene, from the courtroom to the competition stage, is one of resilience, passion, and dedication. Her success as a bodybuilder mirrors her approach to life—grounded in hard work, learning, and a desire to make a positive impact.

The Keene Family YMCA is grateful for her contributions, not just as a volunteer but as an inspiring example of strength and community spirit.

Thank you, Elana, for being a shining light in our Volunteer Spotlight Series. Your story reminds us that determination and community go hand in hand. Keep inspiring us with your incredible journey—both on and off the stage!
