At the Keene Family YMCA, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, active, and fulfilling life—no matter their age, ability, or current health status. Chronic diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, and balance-related conditions can make everyday activities more challenging, but with the right support, education, and movement, positive change is possible.
That’s why we’re proud to offer a variety of evidence-based Chronic Disease Prevention Programs designed to help individuals manage risk factors, improve mobility, and build confidence in a welcoming, supportive environment. These programs go beyond exercise—they create community, reduce isolation, and empower participants to take meaningful steps toward better health.
Below, we highlight three impactful programs available at the Keene Family YMCA and the unique benefits each provides.
Tai Ji Quan™: Moving for Better Balance
Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but the good news is that balance and stability can be improved at any age. Tai Ji Quan™: Moving for Better Balance is a gentle, low-impact program specifically designed to help adults ages 50 and older improve balance, coordination, and confidence in everyday movement.
Based on traditional Tai Chi forms and supported by extensive research, this 24-week, progressive program focuses on slow, intentional movements that strengthen the body while calming the mind. Classes meet twice per week and are welcoming to all ability levels. Participants who use assistive devices such as canes are encouraged to join, and movements can be adapted to individual needs.
Beyond the physical benefits, Tai Ji Quan offers something equally important: connection. Participants learn together in a safe, supportive group setting that fosters encouragement, camaraderie, and relief from the isolation that can sometimes accompany limited mobility.
Program benefits include:
- Improved balance and postural control
- Strengthening of lower body muscles essential for walking and standing
- Reduced risk of falls and increased confidence in daily activities
- Enhanced flexibility and range of motion
- Improved focus, relaxation, and overall well-being
For many participants, Tai Ji Quan becomes more than a class—it becomes a trusted part of their weekly routine and a foundation for moving through life with greater ease.
Diabetes Prevention Program
Type 2 diabetes affects millions of Americans, but it is often preventable. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is a year-long, research-backed lifestyle change program designed to help adults reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes through achievable, sustainable changes.
This program is ideal for adults age 18 and older who are overweight and have been diagnosed with prediabetes or gestational diabetes. Led by a trained lifestyle coach, participants meet in a small-group classroom setting for guidance, accountability, and encouragement.
The program consists of 25 sessions over 12 months—with weekly meetings during the first several months, followed by bi-weekly and then monthly sessions. Rather than focusing on quick fixes, the DPP emphasizes realistic goal setting, problem-solving, and long-term habit building.
Participants work toward two primary goals in the first half of the program:
- Achieving a 7% reduction in body weight
- Increasing physical activity to at least 150 minutes per week
Program benefits include:
- Reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
- Practical education on healthy eating and physical activity
- Weekly accountability and guidance from a trained lifestyle coach
- Safe, gradual weight loss through sustainable habits
- A supportive group environment that keeps motivation strong
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is also covered by Medicare Part B, making it an accessible and affordable option for many older adults who qualify.
AEA Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program
Living with arthritis or joint-related conditions can make traditional exercise uncomfortable or intimidating. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program, held in the Keene Family YMCA’s teaching pool, provides a safe, effective, and enjoyable way to stay active.
This warm-water group exercise program is designed to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve overall physical function. The buoyancy of the water supports the body, easing pressure on joints while allowing participants to move freely and confidently.
Classes focus on gentle strength training, flexibility, endurance, and low-impact aerobic activity. The warm water environment helps relax muscles, reduce stiffness, and make movement more comfortable—especially for those who may struggle with land-based exercise.
Program benefits include:
- Reduced joint stress, pain, and stiffness thanks to warm water support
- Improved joint mobility, flexibility, and circulation
- Increased muscle strength using natural water resistance
- Enhanced balance and functional movement
- An accessible, low-impact environment for all fitness levels
- An encouraging social atmosphere that promotes consistency and confidence
Many participants find that aquatic exercise not only improves their physical health, but also boosts mood and quality of life.
