Best Summer Ever

We had a great summer! Thanks to all who joined us for camp this year. Stay tuned for information about the Y’s School Vacation Camps and 2022 Summer Programs coming soon!

Summer Camp

Welcome to summer at the Keene Family YMCA! Whether you’re considering a traditional day camp or a specialty camp, summer at the Y is always filled with excitement, adventure, new friends, lifelong memories, and most of all fun! Our camp programs are based on the Y values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, delivered in a safe and supportive environment where safety is our top priority. We provide affordable, quality summer experiences for youth ages 4-12. There are few experiences as unique and special as camp. At camp, children become part of a community and form friendships as they learn how to be more independent and contribute to a group. Amidst all the fun of sports, crafts, outdoor adventures, and more, children develop skills that build character and promote leadership. At the Y, we believe every child should be given the opportunity to experience the joy of summer camp. Don’t miss out!

Financial Assistance

Keene Family YMCA has recently been approved to participate in the New Hampshire Department of Education’s ReKINDling Curiosity program! Through this program, families can receive up to $650 to help cover the cost of sending their children to camp. Space is limited, so be sure to apply soon if you’re interested! Click here to apply.

At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to join and participate at the Y. As part of our mission as a non-profit the Y offers financial assistance through our Membership for All program. All of this is made possible through the generosity of donors to our Annual Campaign.

Camp Wakonda 2021

Camp Wakonda is a traditional day camp based outdoors that offers different, exciting themes each week (see details below). Campers will be engaged each day through active group games, STEM projects, creative arts, team building, water play and more! Camp programming is intentional in its effort to build self-esteem and positive relationships among campers. Our camp counselors are professional role models and bring each camp day to life with their supportive nature and enthusiasm.

At Camp Wakonda your camper will find their home away from home where they feel safe and a sense of belonging. Individual, daily team huddles bring the group together to build trust, respect for one another and a sense of social responsibility. Back by popular demand – the BEAD PROGRAM! This program fosters our cause of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility by awarding campers unique tokens of achievement for their camp experiences. Campers will also be introduced to goal setting and the power behind their own abilities by tracking Mastery Skill progress throughout the week. Whether campers attend Camp Wakonda for one week, or all eight, each week will be a unique experience that creates memories and friendships to last a lifetime!

Campers will be grouped into the following teams:

Camp Wakonda Themes

BACKYARD BASH (June 28-July 2)
The grand opening of summer camp is celebrated with traditional games and activities one might do in their own backyard. Campers will get creative tie-dying their own T-shirts. We will spread positivity into the community by painting Kindness Rocks and placing them within the neighborhood. Campers will also get their hearts pumping with traditional games such as Kickball and Capture the Flag.

This week we will open our eyes and our hearts to the diverse world around us. Campers will explore several different native crafts, games and holiday traditions from countries such as Malawi, Japan, Australia, Canada and Brazil.

Throughout this week, campers will learn about the natural world surrounding them and the delicate balance that all living creatures contribute to. We will investigate the life of a bug through the “Adopt-a-Bug” activity. Younger campers will learn to identify local plants and flowers while creating a nature weaving; older campers will learn about the effects an oil spill can have and how it can be cleaned up. Campers will learn how to identify different types of recyclable materials through games such as “Litter Relay” and “Trash Corners.”

S.T.E.A.M. (July 19-23)
Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math will be the focus of camp this week. Campers will explore expressive art through sculpting. Younger campers will “light up” when they construct their own LED popsicle stick flashlight; older campers test their hypothesis in a Hot Air Balloon experiment. Math games will keep our brains and our bodies moving through the week.

DISNEY PLUS (July 26-30)
This week at camp we celebrate everything Disney. Campers will participate in the fun-filled game of direction and speed in Pirates of the Caribbean. Creative sparks will fly as younger campers create their own Disney themed Seek & Find bottles; older campers design their own bleach-spray T-shirt. Throughout the week campers will also recreate different scenes/skits from their favorite Disney movies.

This week is all about embracing your creativity and talents. All campers will complete an Inspirational Splatter Paint project that expresses their own strengths and characteristics. Younger campers will learn about volume with the Popcorn Cylinder activity; older campers will create short claymation stop-action videos. On Friday, we will host a camp-wide talent show!

SUPERHERO (August 9-13)
Get ready to show your inner hero this week. All campers will have the opportunity to participate in the Egg Drop Challenge – a friendly competition to see who can build a safe container to keep their egg from cracking when it is dropped from the roof of the YMCA! We will play several different games such as Aquaman Relay, Spiderman Obstacle Course, and Kryptonite Clean-Up.

COLOR WARS (August 16-20)
Get ready to get messy! This week at camp we will embrace the colors of the world with several messy projects such as Balloon Burst Painting, Rainbow Bubble Snakes, and everyone’s favorite – SLIME! We will celebrate the end of the summer with our traditional camp COLOR RUN!!!
