What is STEAM you might ask?
STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics to guide students in critical thinking, innovation, inquiry, dialogue, and wonder. This result in students taking thoughtful risks, engaging in experiential learning, creative in problem-solving, embracing collaboration, and working through the creative process!(EducationCloset)
So how do we incorporate the STEAM education in Camp Wakonda curriculum you may ask? We partner with other organizations that come to camp and share STEAM activities. In summer 2017, 4H came to camp and taught our campers how to make water filtration systems and talked about what we can do to limit the amount of water that is wasted. 4H also came to camp and taught campers about Aquaponics, and how this method of gardening benefits the environment.
In summer of 2017, we also partnered with the Keene Library whose volunteers brought fun gadgets and robots to teach us about engineering and programming. Campers got to make hands on circuit critters that transmitted energy.
STEAM can be found through all facets of camp activities, such as art projects, building challenges, cooking, making slime, and much more. Because here at Camp Wakonda we know we are shaping the minds of the next generation of innovators, educators, learners, and leaders of the 21st century!
