Many people I talk to seem to be very concerned with their body weight, and come to the YMCA with a goal of losing it. While losing weight (if you need to) is great, I challenge everyone to dig deeper with their weight loss goals.
Losing weight can be extremely challenging for so many reasons, and can also be limiting if that is your only fitness goal. How satisfied will you be when you lose 5 pounds? How has that changed your life? Becoming healthier and living better can be measured in so many ways besides just numbers on the scale.
I would encourage everyone to look at more than just body weight:
Are you losing inches? Do your clothes fit better? Do you have more energy? Are you sleeping better? Can you stop taking one of those medications? Do you perform better? Are you stronger? Do you feel better about life/yourself? Can you engage in new activities?
The list goes on forever. The point is, losing weight is not always easy, and to stay motivated you may want to look at additional ways to measure and celebrate your successes.
Happy New Year!
