2015 Climbing Fest Wrap-Up

The Y’s third Climbing Festival was a huge hit! Members and guests packed the lobby on Saturday, March 28th eager to try out the Y’s wall and take a shot at winning some cool prizes donated by the American Alpine Club, the Access Fund, With Good Reasons LLC, and Toadstool Bookshop here in Keene. Events included our popular prize raffles, a knot tying station, and a speed climbing competition. We played climbing videos on the lobby TV, and Rick Merritt of the American Alpine Club even drove three hours from eastern Massachusetts to spend the day chatting with our local climbers.

It was great to see so many faces at the festival – each and every one of you who stopped by helped make the day special. We had a handful of non-members who came to the Y just for the festival. Vising were folks who traveled from Massachusetts and other areas of the state. a family who heard of the festival from a climbing event Y staff recently ran at a nearby school, and area climbers who usually spend their time recreating outdoors. Of course some of our cherished members also made an appearance, and the event itself would not have been possible without the participation and help of our amazing climbing volunteers, teen climbers, and Teen Leader Corps members.

New this year was a mini climbing competition. We had several climbers spend the day racing up our wall, trying to get the fastest time on each of our seven routes. Individuals put up some impressive numbers. Results will be posted soon!

Thanks again to all who helped make our third climbing festival a success. Us YMCA climbers are always thrilled to share our passion for climbing with others, and hope you had as much fun as we did. We hope you’ll join us next year and on some adventures before that; the Y offers climbing programs and classes year round and does outdoor trips during the warmer months – we even run a week long teen climbing camp each summer. Our next big event is an outdoor trip to Marlow –  join us on May 23rd for some climbing on real rock! If you have any questions about our climbing programs or next year’s event, contact Sports & Teen Director Kari Post at kpost@keene-ymca.org or 603-283-5252.
