The Keene Elm City Rotary Club is partnering with the Keene Senior Center, the Keene Family YMCA, the Keene Recreation Center, and the Hoffman Family Foundation to offer a no-cost opportunity for seniors over the age of 70 to participate in the 2014 Clarence DeMar Marathon on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014.
Seniors who register before July 4, 2014 will receive a simple log sheet and will track at least 25 miles of walking or jogging. By completing this log and returning it to the Keene Senior Center, the Keene Family YMCA, or the Keene Recreation Center before September 12th, 2014, seniors will earn the chance to complete the last 1.2 miles of the official Clarence DeMar Marathon course on race day. Participating seniors receive a custom t-shirt and a finishers’ medal, too!
There is no fee to participate and the program is non-competitive. The Super Seniors DeMar program is modeled on the popular Kids DeMar Marathon where last year more than 700 school children from 25 area schools were tracking their 25 miles of activity and finished the last 1.2 miles alongside the seniors. This year 35 schools are involved and 1000 children are anticipated. There will be free group activity events available over the summer for seniors and a $5 pasta dinner the day before the race, too!
Seniors must register in person at Keene Senior Center (70 Court Street, Keene), the Keene Family YMCA (200 Summit Road, Keene) or the Keene Recreation Center (312 Washington Street, Keene) between May 1, 2014 and July 4, 2014. Participation is limited to the first 100 registrants.
More Information available by visiting the Keene Senior Center (open 8:30-4:30, weekdays) or by calling 352-5037.
