The Keene Family YMCA has won a 2013 Facility of Merit™ Award by Athletic Business® for being an outstanding example of sports and recreation facility architecture. The Y was selected as one of ten winners from a pool of 65 contenders nationwide. The Keene Family YMCA and the facilities architectural firm, Architectural Resources Cambridge, will be presented their awards at the 2013 Athletic Business Conference & Expo in San Diego, CA on Thurs. November 21st.
The Y’s facility which opened in 2011 on Summit Road in Keene was cited by one AB Judge, Greg Garlock as “simple elegance. Very nice solution and detailing, especially for the budget.”
“This is a tremendous honor for our community. It recognizes the hard work and dedication of the countless volunteers who raised the funds and oversaw the process to make this project possible,” says Helene Mogridge, Keene Family YMCA, CEO. “As a result of their efforts the Y is now accessible to everyone and is positioned to serve the Keene area for decades to come.”
The historic farms that populate the area inspired the design of the Keene Family YMCA. The exterior red siding and white trim are reminiscent of typical New England barns. AB Judge, David Dymeck, noted the facility “fits in with the New England barn vernacular. Simple and efficient planning.” The facility which houses the Y’s Children’s Learning Center, two pools, a gymnastics center, basketball gymnasium with indoor suspended running track and a two story climbing wall is unique in Cheshire County. The facility currently serves approximately 6,500 members, providing space for the Y’s core programs which focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
